We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
