Her Royal Highness's Traditional Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.
The large audience will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The central message of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the charity, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the evening's event.
"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
