Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
