New Year's Partygoers Told to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Continue In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are due to be low, meaning warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday
Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- The public are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Alerts Released
At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
