Combatants chuckle as they travel on the bed of a transport truck, racing alongside a series of nine dead bodies and driving towards the setting African sunset.

"See this extensive effort. Observe this instance of ethnic cleansing," a combatant exclaims.

He grins as he turns the recording device on his person and his companion militiamen, their paramilitary insignia visible: "They will all be killed in this manner."

The men are exulting in a mass killing that relief organizations fear claimed the lives of in excess of thousands of individuals in the African metropolis of the Darfur city last month.

A Community Cut Off from the Globe
