Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
