The Compassion of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
