The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A new term came to light a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to treat a child who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.
The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
