The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
