The Mystery Within that Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Cavern
After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in season 2.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.
