The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
