New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
