Winter Weather Systems Claim Five Victims in Gaza Amid Dire Living Situations in Makeshift Shelters.
Strong winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents housing people displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than 4 individuals. These deaths highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after over two years of intense bombardment and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.
Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Elements
While a ceasefire has been active since October, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter necessary to withstand recurring winter storms.
Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, said on Tuesday that the dead were two women, a girl, and a man.
Separately, the local health authority stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia overnight.
"International actors has enabled us to experience loss of life in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."
Family Buried in Tent Collapse
As per Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one household — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall fell on top of their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least five others were hurt in the incident.
Family members on Tuesday started removing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' during the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.
